Hey guys, on Sunday I went to Danville to visit my husband and ended up getting sick. An incident report was made of the situation. What I need is help, if anyone has gone to Danville and gotten sick from eating the food, please email me and let me know. I spoke with the Warden and he already knows that I am going to pursue this matter to make sure that no one else gets sick with the sandwiches from the vending machine. There are suppose to be dates on the sandwich packages and there are not. I an not going into this to get any money what I am trying to do is get a class action suit against the vending machine company so that they will not be putting food in the vending machines that are not good. I am doing it on behalf of Danville Correctional Facility. Maybe we can get the prices lowered from $4.00 back down to the $2.50 that they use to be. We will just have to see about that. So if you can help me with it I will appreciated no names with be used but I just need to know numbers. My name will be listed on the class action suit if and when it is filed, and the rest will say Jane or John Doe.

Thanks Cherokee

I to would like to be included in the class action suit, the prices are just about out of this world. They have the nerves to double the prices on every item. Then keep the same machines what a bunch of crock. I am sure the Warden and Business Office was aware of the Vending Machine Company prices before bringing them in. They just thought oh well they will still buy. And yes me and mate got sick eating from those machines. And I am usually aware of expiration dates, but never even thought about it in there. Also when they changed over company back in December last year the cards cost $5.00 and now the same cards are costing $3.00 they giving people $2.00 credit. What about the people who brought the cards back in December? Also they do not have who the Vending Machine Company name or who to contact for issues such as this. We should know who is receiving our monies and how to contact them if a problem arise. They post what they want to post. I just found this out of Friday the cost of the card now, and guard told this to someone who need to purchase a card. Goodthing I was sitting there.

Thanks Karen

***Update on New Machines at Menard***

All Sandwiches $3.95, mostly round deep dish pizzas by (Tony's) & (RedBaron) , there is still Hamburgers, Fish, Chicken.
I didn't see one Breakfast sandwich and I was one of the first at the machines.
They have orange juice and a mixed juice in the same machine for $1.95.
They had Cheesecake, and chocolate pie for $1.95.
Chips is .60 and candybars .75
They have 2 soda machines 20 oz bottles are 1.50.
I'm not a coffee drinker so I'm not sure what is in that machine.
When you come up stairs there will be instructions on how to
use your new machine card. The old machine use to suck it all the way
in, now it dont.   You have to watch the light up buttons or your money
will be wiped out if you pull the card out before its ready, when it blinks
green on the machine you are safe to take it out or make another selection
in the same machine if you like. Good luck on finding napkins now too, I had
to go take some paper towels that is used to clean the tables.
The company is "Quality Vending". I dont see that the food is any better
just HIGHER!

And is there one microwave, or are there two? I've heard both! If there's just one, how is that working out?

I was also told by a Female CO that "her card doesn't work like ours"
so that means they do have vending cards for the machines but
slightly differant. Also if you try and use the soda machine outside
of the "eye" when you are leaving our cards wont work in there,
it must just be for the CO's to use not visitors.

I bet you a quarter their pop costs a lot less.  I remember seeing a vending machine with pop for CO's on the way to the visit room at Robinson.  Their pop was $1.15 and it was at least $1.50 in the visit room.

I heard today while at Menard, that the CO's
is wanting to "Boycott" the new vending machines that was put in
for them to use downstairs.
They are not happy about prices going up on the
food. I was there for 5 hours today and Quality vending
did not show up one time and there was hardly any food
left in the machines. So my guess is they don't make a daily
trip there like the old vending company did. Also while waiting
for my visit a lady tried to use her card to go ahead and get
her food, it got stuck in the machine, it wouldn't come out or
turn to make a selection on the food. The CO had to go
behind the machine, unplug it so her card would come out
for her to reuse it!

Oh that's just great. Well, maybe if the c/o's boycott, it will help. If it were just the inmates boycotting, they'd probably pull all the machines out!

After visiting this week I can say that these new machines and everything about them is horrible.  The food is more expensive for almost everything, so make sure you try to bring more money.  The cards are so tricky that many people have lost ALL THE MONEY ON THE CARD.  You have to read the instructions on how and when to pull out the card.  If you pull the card out before it does its calculation, it wipes out the card.  My husband lost $4.00 because he tried the door too soon.  The machine registered that he received the item and he did not.  This ended up happeneing to us twice.  The guards were nice about trying to help people.  There is no way a child (even an older one) can go use these machines.  Good luck to anyone that can not read the directions.  How about all the people who only speak and read Spanish?  Yes, my son heard that the guards are boycotting these machines.  They are very upset about it and say not to buy anything.  That is good they are doing that, but they can bring food from home.  When we are visiting, it is a very big part of our visit to be able to buy something special for our loved one to eat and drink.  What we could do is cut down.  Not to buy much to eat ourselves.  That way they would not be generating as much money.  I have one question - Who is making all this money that the people are getting cheated out of.  At the end of each day, this company has received much more money that it shuld have for the amount of food it sold.
Someone should be auditing them.

Also, there are two microwaves.  One is on top of the other one. FUN!!!!  We are hearing horrible rumors about what the new visiting conditions will be.  Isn't there a law that we have to get 1-1/2 hour vivits?

Personally  I didn't think the food was that much higher. I will pay closer attention next week . I always  compare the prices to what the exact item would cost us out on the street and so for I have noted the sandwich prices in the machines to be a little less then in our convenience marts in southern Illinois. I know the machines are a bit tricky so I just slowed down some when using them.
FYI  I just got my weekly call from my guy, he said the weather is great at Menard.

The doors on the machines can be tricky.  Here's what I've figured out ....

Get the item you want positioned behind the door.  Insert the card and wait until it has been fully read and it shows the amount of $$ you have on it.  Then open the door as far as you can, usually you'll get stopped at the halfway mark, and hold the door like that until you hear the clicking noise, then push the door fully open.

If you try to open the door before you card has been fully read, it won't open at all the first try.  So you might as well wait.

Similar thing for the chips and candy vending ... if you select your item too soon, before your card has been fully read, you end up having to select it again.  If you wait until your card is fully read you only have to enter your selection once.

I was just at Vienna this past weekend, so I'll give ya the scoop on the vending machine situation there.

The machines at Vienna use CASH and not the debit card system, and you are allowed to bring up to $20 in for a visit. The change machine only takes ones and fives, so make sure you have small bills to bring in there.

There were 3 drink machines, a candy/chip machine, and a sandwich machine. The drink machines had water, juice and soda. There is NO coffee machine, and an old microwave.

The machines are restocked on Fridays, so by Sundays visit, there is slim pickings. I overheard a CO telling another CO that they are trying to convince the food people to come in and restock sometime on Saturdays to help out with the Sunday rush of people, but who knows if that will happen.

I typically don't trust vending machine sandwiches, so I stuck to water and M&Ms :)

Dixon prices are all over the map.  A lot of  $3 sandwiches had gone up to  $3.25 and chips had gone up from  65 cents to  75 cents.  However there are still tuna , egg and ham salad and other sandwiches for .85.  apples for  .25 and yogurt also for .25   I tried a ham and egg sandwich on texas toast for  $3.  waste of money.  it was just cheap sliced packaged ham and a little cheap sliced american cheese with a lot of bread and a little egg.  There were a number of sandwiches with real beef, pork or chicken and he really liked those. He loved the BBQ chicken strips from the machine that heats the entrees.  I do like the variety of snacks like the butter toffee peanuts, swedish fish,  trail mix and even sour patch kids candies.  The ice cream selection is good at Dixon.   He had a chocolate choc chip "muffin"  for his birthday and oreo ice cream sandwich.   We did go  through $35 to $40 a day but had 10 hour visits.  We would have certainly spent that much eating all meals for a day,  any place but home.

Dazzler,   PGI seems to be the company that services the vending machines at Dixon.  I looked for it last week.

Someone mention the prices at Menard, the ones that I do remember are:
Pizza - $3.95
Chips - $.75 & $.70
Candy bars - $.75
Suzy Q - $1.25
Cheeseburgers - $1.00
Cheeseburger with bacon - $3.95
Microwave popcorn  - $1.25
Pouch of Capri sun juice - $1.25

they do have a hot beverage machine but I didn't take the time to check out the prices or the items. What they tried to do was add some nutritious items but at the cost that are outrage. They do have two microwaves but the one on top cooks so much slower so it takes longer. The problems with these new cards are how fast you can lose your money. Everyone must read the instructions or like I did watched someone while they did their transaction. Good luck because a lot of visitors lost money from those machines.

my boyfriend will be at taylorville soon.  he is a total health freak.  are there any healthy options in the vending machines there.  Like grilled chicken sandwiches?  or maybe some decent subs.  He can always put the bread aside.  We are just alwas looking for good healthy protein options.
