I think the vending machine company has to refund you if you write and send in the card and request it.  When Stateville changed once,  they had a flyer up in the visiting waiting room about who to contact.  Between transfers and changes on debit cards,  I try to use it up each trip.  I have a collection of them!

Menard has a sign up saying they will not refund unused funds from the cards. In fact, a couple years ago they put up a sign saying they would no longer refund unused portions (like when an inmate transfers to another prison or goes home).

At Lawrence, the sign did read that there will be no refunds and to make sure you use up the money on the card.

    FYI

Don't know if its true, but heard the other night, that in 3-4 weeks a new *company* is taking over vending machines for the state.   I am going to use up everything I have on my card for now and wait to see if a change takes place the beginning of February, or soon after...

Hey guys, on Sunday I went to Danville to visit my husband and ended up getting sick. An incident report was made of the situation. What I need is help, if anyone has gone to Danville and gotten sick from eating the food, please email me and let me know. I spoke with the Warden and he already knows that I am going to pursue this matter to make sure that no one else gets sick with the sandwiches from the vending machine. There are suppose to be dates on the sandwich packages and there are not. I an not going into this to get any money what I am trying to do is get a class action suit against the vending machine company so that they will not be putting food in the vending machines that are not good. I am doing it on behalf of Danville Correctional Facility. Maybe we can get the prices lowered from $4.00 back down to the $2.50 that they use to be. We will just have to see about that. So if you can help me with it I will apprecitate no names with be used but I just need to know numbers. My name will be listed on the class action suit if and when it is filed, and the rest will say Jane or John Doe.

Thanks Cherokee

Wow Cherokee...how awful.... I often wondered about some of that food that's in those machines.  Is it possible the refrigeration went out and the food all spoiled?  I suppose if the stuff is heated to high temperatures it might kill the bacteria in some of it...but those that don't heat everything hot...hmm.....

I sure hope you're feeling better now.  I've had food poisoning a few times in my life and it wasn't pleasant.  I was part of a Class action suit many years ago when the Jewel stores sold milk that sickened many hundreds of people with salmonella...my whole family was part of the suit and we all received monetary settlements from the Jewel company...but it sure wasn't worth the two weeks we spent in bed sicker than dogs...and the hospital stay...

It'll be interesting to see how this develops...did Tony get sick too...and do you remember what you ate that visit?  Also, can you tell us which vending company services Danville?  Keep us posted on this....and hopefully no one else will have to go through this....

Jim got sicker than a dog on our last visit and he's pretty sure it was from the turkey sandwich he ate the day before. Luckily, it was only a mild case of food poisoning since it only lasted about 12 hours. But any food poisoning is miserable while it lasts. We always check the dates on the packages. Burch's Food Services has been the vending service down there, and they do mark the packages. The other possibility we considered was that it was from the ice in the pop machine. That machine is always breaking down, and who knows what kind of bacteria gets into the ice. I saw a 20/20 show on food poisoning from fast food restaurants, and ice from the pop machine dispensers is the single biggest cause of food poisoning.

Word is they are finally changing out the vending machines on Tuesday (Feb 20) at Menard. I told my guy we are going to spend every dime on the card I have on our visit Monday, even if we have to give it away to keep from losing it to the IDOC and the old company. Everyone be aware rumor is that prices are going to be up, you know we have to pay for the new machines and the IDOC must get their share. I think any profit needs to go to our guys even if it is only a penny. I guess I'm just in a bitchy mood, the cold and snow does that to me

Purchase of vending machines and their upkeep is an expense for the vending machine company.  I'd like to hear how the prices are.   Like I posted once,  Big Muddy prices were half of Robinsons,  literally.

We got new machines about one year ago at Dixon and the prices went up BIG TIME, the good thing is the food is much better.  He can actually eat rice and some chicken and it cost about $6.00 (fried rice and strips of chicken breast).  We also got a new coffee machine with every flavored coffee and if you dont like flavored coffee  hc you can prepare decafe or regular anyway you want it.  That's my favorite machine, OW, I almost forgot we also got a machine that warms up the food you buy, it has chicken breast sandwiches, pizzas, FRIES, and 2 types of chicken fingers (plain and hot).  I am really happy now with the food, expensive yes, but WORTH it, cause  I love feeding him when I go there!!!  One machine has great ice creams too!!!  situp1     tramp12    he, he....

I contacted Burch's Food Services via email and told them about all the money I lost on my last visit. They sent me a full refund, no questions asked. And they were nice about it and actually apologized for the malfunction.

I had noticed that sometimes the machines would double charge for a item, A lady a few weeks ago put money $10.00 on a new card and when she got upstairs and put the card in the machine it read it as 65cents. another lady and myself helped them out, but I don't think she got a refund on her card. snowblo

I am pleased with the cost and variety at Dixon.   I think bottled water was about  45 cents?   and in one machine there are always a variety of  85 cent sandwiches.  Ham salad,  egg salad, that type of thing.  They have real juices.  The coffee machines are just  45 cents for a black regular coffee if I remember correctly.  Then they have things like a chicago beef on hoagie for  $3.50,  with quite a bit of meat.   I eat at the hotel and  try to hold back some,  and eat later if I'm hungry.  Dixon has a huge variety and I like that.   They have a tyson Chicken vending machine,  referred to above.

A friend was visiting at Menard last week and put $10 on a card.  When he got up there, it said 40 cents.  The guard he asked about it felt bad for them, but he could not do anything.  Someone was so very nice and bought them a hamburger, snack  and drink.   These were total strangers who my son never saw before.   People in general are extremely nice and generous.  We have given money to people for cards when they did not know about them.  I guess what goes around comes around.  I tell everyone that the trick is to bring in two cards in case one gets an error reading.  When I was leaving today, I gave my cards with a little left over money on them to strangers also.  Why should you throw away the cards with money on them when someone could use it.

Can Jims tell me the address of who he could write to about this to get a refund?  It is not even about the $10 - it is the principle of the thing.  Today, I saw two different  people whose cards had errors one them.  One lady had $.40 on her card also!!!!  The vending machine company is making a fortune this week. I have also had items charge double wuite a few times.  New machines are definitely needed, that is for sure.  For the guy's sake, I hope the food is decent.
