Vending Machines & Cards
« on: July 05, 2006, 10:44:44 PM »
First of all... I hope everyone still has all the fingers and toes that they started out with on July 4th.

Second,

Does anyone know of any way to get a refund from a debit card?  I had just put another $20 on my debit card from Logan CC and my dad got transfered suddenly.  My old card was useless at Big Muddy CC and I had to get a new one.  I called Logan CC and they were dumber then a box of rocks.  Any ideas?  I'm guessing I'm out the balance on that card.

I'm guessing you're out the $20, too, unless you can find someone who will buy it from you. I don't know about other prisons but at Menard there are signs posted everywhere stating that you can no longer get refunds on unused funds on vending cards. It's difficult enough to get refunds when the card or vending machine malfunctions.

*(%$#  My Fiance was @ logan too.  yeah the smart factor over there is on the low side.  they are nice though. (sometimes)  anyway, no you cannot get a refund fromt he Logan debit cards.  There is a sign next to the machine that you buy it from.  Post it here on the boards for sale of trade in the debit card section.

I saw a prison debit card for sale on Ebay!  !#%`

I was a fraid of that.   I never even imagined that someone could get transfered for no apparent reason.

I know sometimes it's to relieve overcrowding in a prison.  When Lawrence was opened people were transferred there from other level 2's to fill it up and they didn't have a choice.  They had to wait 6 months to request a transfer.
Then sometimes it is because they now qualify for a lower security level prison and they need room at the level 1's.
Another reason is when there has been some big incident with the inmate.  This just happened to a penpal of mine.  He was in PC in Pontiac and they shipped him to Menard against his wishes.    Maybe the staff just gets fed up.

It doesn't seem like it should be legal to not refund the money on a debit card.  I bet it could be challenged.

It probably could be challenged if there were not signs everywhere saying that they do not refund.  Since you are warned prior to putting money in the machine, I would assume they are with in their rights.

Correct.  I forgot all about those signs.  I'd got the card back in November I think.  I go to sleep and my mind resets.  I think I need a battery back up for my brain. I see by the clock on my monitor that it is 11pm, I suppose I should go to bed.  The alarm is going to be loud at 4am.

I have never seen those signs.  I guess it varies at each prison.  When Stateville changed cards they had a sign up about where to get a refund.

I have two debits cards, one from Menard and another from Pickneyville. I just keep them as reminders from the prisons  :-D. I just spoke to a friend of mine who is at Stateville, he said they just sent some guys from Menard to Stateville's because of the fighting that as been going on there. Then can ship someone at the drop of a hat when they want.

Cherokee, my husband also told me that they have been shipping guys out all over the state. That's probably a good thing, though, they can lop off the so-called head of a gang by sending him away, and like magic, someone else appears to take his place.

Pard me.  I have 1 debit card available for Logan CC.  Send me 3 dollars and the card is yours.  I'm sure that I added money to it before my last visit at Logan CC.  I can't remember the balance.  If you are interested, or know someone who might be.  Send me a PM.   ;\'

The current vendor lost its contract and a new vendor will be taking over at any time now. New cards will be issued and the prison is advising visitors to only put one day's worth of money on their vending cards. Additionally, beware of the dreaded vending machines. I've seen them wipe out cards left and right this week. Or, seemingly wipe them out and then all of a sudden start working again.  The juice machine and the soft drink machine are the worst. Another thing the machines are doing is charging double for some items. And, if you select an item and the door gets stuck and won't open, it will deduct the cost of that item from your card anyway.

Even the officers are complaining about it and one of them speculated that perhaps the vending machine company is just trying to get all the money they can from the machines before their contract expires.

The new vendors were up looking at the old machines, but I doubt they'll buy them. They're falling apart. I personally hope they get some shorter ones in there because I can't see the items on the top two shelves!

And now, the visitor has to clear the trash from the tables, while the inmate has to clean the table with the spray cleaner. There's no inmate worker hanging about like before.

I brought up that I had heard cards were "wiped clean" to a CO once.  There is something simple you can do to remedy it.  I can't remember what it is,  but I know I posted on it once before.  Those companies must have a whole lot of money on the balances left on the cards!!

We just changed vendors at Lawrence as well.  Same cards there as before...........But my reason for posting this here is to say that the food is about the same, maybe better by a little bit but the prices did go up significanlty.  Just something to consider in case it's the same company.

They have a solution they can rub on the magnetic strip, but that hasn't remedied the situation this time. In fact, in the past, sometimes that has worked and sometimes not. But it's always worth a shot before assuming the card is stripped.

The interim cards now being issued don't have the Menard information printed on them, and no arrow showing which end to insert. So you just have to guess. If you put it in the wrong way, you'll get an error code. All you have to do is remove it and turn it around to the other side and insert it again and it should be okay.

I am posting this seperate from the one about Menard Vending machines because I just visited Lawrence and found out that there too, after the 30th of this month our current cards will no longer be effective.  Of course, yesterday, my card wasn't effective in the sandwich machine.....THE MOST IMPORTANT!  The guy had just came to fill them and I guess did something funny on the reset.  Anyway, just and FYI for all visitors that if you aren't going until next month you may need to get a new card.............perhaps you could call first and then post the specifics of what your facility will be doing so others can read about it here.
