Tamara Browning: Inmate service opens up office

Published Saturday, October 13, 2007

A community-based, nonprofit corporation that helps prison inmates and people formerly incarcerated will host a ribbon cutting and open house today at its new office.

TOWER OF REFUGE INCV., founded in 2005 in Springfield by LORENZO and BEVEY LOUDEN, will host the event from 1 to 3 p.m. at its facility at 329 S. New St.

Attendees will be given a tour of the site, which includes offices, a conference room, multipurpose room and training room.

“Tower of Refuge has been providing services for the last two years, but most of the things we’ve done has been through networking with other organizations or inside the DOC (Department of Corrections) facility. Now we actually have our own offices,” Bevey Louden said.

“We’ll be able to really fully utilize our volunteers and continue to make a great impact with other social service organizations that serve ex-offenders.”

Tower of Refuge’s purpose is to reduce the rate of recidivism in Illinois through various programs and community support. The organization provides several re-entry services to help people who are in prison, former inmates and their families. Since its founding, Tower of Refuge has helped more than 100 ex-offenders.

Among the organization’s programs are “The Ties that Bind Us,” which reaches out to families; employment-readiness workshops; and “Network of Employment Opportunity,” a program that encourages employers to hire ex-offenders.

Funded mostly through donations, Tower of Refuge will host a family photo fundraiser from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. Saturday, Oct. 27, at its new facility. For purchase of a $5 coupon, a family may schedule an appointment to have its photo taken and receive a 10-by-13-inch photo.

Coupons will be available at the open house, by stopping by or calling the office at 241-9911 (office hours will be announced) or on the Web site www.towerofrefugeinc.com (by donating $5 and designating it for the fundraiser).
