My husband commented on Stateville speaks to me on a visit the other day. He really likes it, and appreciates the subscription. He said "it's nice to see soething positive circulating around such a negative place"! So I recommend that everyone get their man a subscription, it's just mail that automatically gets sent, nothing you have to do.

Thanks for the updates guys!
Kim
I would suggest, if you can afford it, to include $10 in your request for subscriptions.  Funding for each issue is usually a problem...although free for inmates, if the inmate (or the outmate) can afford it, Bill Ryan would appreciate the $$.

I couldn't pull it up Scout.   Is Bill taking submissions of poetry from inmates currently?
Poetry and other articles from inmates are welcome. I encourage everyone to read the  July Special Issue on medical care. If anyone knows a prisoner who has medical issuse should contact Ted Pearson at the address in this issue of Stateville Speaks

The September issue of Stateville Speaks has been posted....thanks to Mah for doing this quickly.

http://www.illinoisprisontalk.org/index.php/topic,2767.0.html

In this issue there is an announcement from Bill Ryan that effective with the next issue he will be resigning as publisher.  Cynthia Kobel will resume this position with the January issue.  Cynthia has been involved in prison reform/activism for many years and currently heads the Tamms Committee.

Although he'll be missed, Bill is making this move to devote more time to working on legislative issues pertaining to our inmates, and more importantly to spend time with his kids and many grandkids.  Bill, thank you for your tireless and never-ending efforts to help our loved ones.   ././/

WOW! Well Bill has done an excellent job. He will be missed but I know will continue to great things for our guys!
I need to email him and find out what ever happened with the winner of an essay contest about the war in Iraq that the guys could enter. My Jo did a beautiful poem/essay and I was kinda hoping maybe he'd win.

Well, Bill, I can certainly understand why you've decided to give up SS. Your input will be sorely missed, BUT, I'm very excited that you'll be able to devote even more time to legislative issues. Scoutthanks for yours and other positive comments. i will continue as a consulting publisher for sometime during a transitional period. Not sure how long this will last but probalby a long time as i will have a very hard time moving away from SS. I am so glad cynthia and jason her assistant are gong to be publislers. this will be great boost to all of us.
We will need lots and lots of supporter from the IPTers to get legislation passed but i do think we will have a good shot if we can get people motivated and willing to work in contacting legislators and attending hearings.  there will be a special editon of SS in dec to provide more detail about legislation and how to provide support.  I will be visiting grandkids and family outof state more and spending time with those in state watching their activities.

Please be sure to ask any inmates you inform about the medical issues, to please state when his medical problems started. This saves a lot of time and effort mailing back and forth. Thanks.

For those who don't know Bill. He persisted and despite getting refused he brought about the Idoc allowing inmates to work on things like Statesville Speaks. Idoc gave every excuse under the sun to not allow the inmates to produce this newsletter but Bill persisted and achieved this. It was a massive achievement.  Well done Bill. Enjoy your children and family!

ALL I can say is WOW!!!!!!!

Bill Ryan's speech on House Bil 4154 is incredible.
What a great speaker and educated man.
The fact that he does so much for all the incarcerated men and women, in trying to get the legislature to understand that DOC needs reformed is astounding.
I am very impressed.

GOOD Job Bill!!!
Keep up the good work!!

In April a special Tamms 10 year issue of SS was mailed to the inmates who receive SS.  We are finding out now that (we believe) that the DOC did not distribute this, however we do not have proof.  If any IPT members have inmates that receive SS, can you check with them to see if they received the April issue (it's specifically on Tamms).  If they have, or have not, can you let me know?  I'd also like to know what facility they are in.

Thanks for your help with this.

I am sorry to be posting back at this late date, but I just noticed this. I remember my H. telling me he did get this issue, and telling me about the article. He is at Stateville.

Could you let me know when the paper comes out to those that purchased it? I did send my $10 fee and I got one copy. After that, I have received nothing more. I can read the paper on here, but I find it enjoyable to have a hard copy.

Any information about this is very welcomed. Thanks.

The last issue of SS mailed was July 08, the one before that was special tamms issus that was NOT delivered to prisoners but you should have gotten one if you are on mailing list. Latest issue (December) is late and will be  mailed next week. I do have a few extra copies of the July if you didnt get it.
SS is printed three times a year plus an occassional special

I've read the first few pages of it, and find it to be very interesting and well-written.

Hello,
I am new to this forum and so far I have found the information valuable.  I am really writing to see what everyone knows about this "Bring Back Parole" article from the January 2010 subscription.  I live in FL and my brother is in Statesville for a long time.  I believe that the sentence was way too extreme for his crime.

My question about these coupons being signed (since I live in FL), if I do have them filled out and signed down here are they going to count or am I just wasting my time?

Please let me know who I need to contact!

Thanks so much!
Cherie

Does anyone know when the new Statesville Speaks will be out? My son called today and said some inmates at Menard told him they got theirs, but he did not.

I sent a pm to Bill, here on IPT with my son's info a while back but my son hasn't received his first newsletter yet. I'm thinking it takes time to get it started, unless his got misplaced somewhere.

We have the latest issuea of SS in PDF file here on IPT, you could always print any of those and send them to your LO, until a new issues comes out and not sure when that will be.

To get on the list for new issues, send our member  Bill a PM and tell him to add your LO to the list, when a new issues comes out, they will get a copy.

he said he got the new statesville speaks newsletter. He said it was a real good one, so do you think it will be posted on Ipt?

When do you think the next statesville speaks will be posted? It has been eight months. I thought maybe they had to quit sending them with the economy the way it is, but I hope not, because I enjoy reading it.

I have just rebuilt that whole page and all the copies of Stateville Speaks, going back to 2004 should be there again:

http://www.illinoisprisontalk.org/index.php?topic=2767.0

Somehow, all the coding for that page was deleted, it should all work again.  :wc1:

Nothing to date in 2013, but I think they are working on one.  As soon as we get anything, it will be put up on IPT.  You can send your check to Bill Ryan, information in this topic in the event the newest issues comes out, it will be mailed to him.

I've just added another new issue in the post above, don't know how we missed this one, but it was the Spring Final Issue of SS.

There will be yet another issue out within a few weeks and when we receive it, IPT will post it!

Does that mean they aren't publishing it anymore? I was going to sign my l/o up to receive it, but didn't want to send a check if there won't be any more issues coming.

Really was amazed at the work put into Stateville Speaks. There are many problems with our prisons and jails and most importantly justice system. It seems that addressing these issues is not allowing for any changes. So we need to make a petition to decrease recidivism and fund re-habitation programs. Lets stop the prison cycle and help those whom we can (HB3668, inmates with mental health disorders, etc.) Mr. Bill Ryan is a great advocate at starting this process, now lets help to make a positive change.

Thank you

IPT has nothing to do with the writing/printing/distributing of this publication and we only put it on the website when it was sent to us, the link via email.

I'm not sure if that ever happened with that issue.
