IPADS and Tablets??
« on: September 30, 2018, 07:50:37 PM »
Has any IDOC facility or location actually received IPADs or Tablets for inmate use?
Are they in operation?
If so what brand are they?
What did they cost?
Can they buy games, or just get music, or send and receive E-Mail?

Thank you

My son just purchased one at Taylorville - it cost approx $127.

The process at least for that prison:

1. Purchase the tablet
2. It then goes to get engraved and programmed (at the prison)
3. When it comes back then its ready to go. Wifi isn't connected yet so the guys have to use the kiosks. Once wifi is activated it will be much quicker.

Yes, they can purchase music with credits thru Connect-GTL.  You need an acct there. Also - it appears that Connect-GTL allows deposits for commissary too. I've always used JPAY (x5 years now) with auto-debit every month.

Most IDOC prisons have them now. The big hold up for the useability seems to be wi-fi. At the present time, Taylorville doesn't have the wifi set up in all the housing units so the guys have to go to a kiosk either in the dayroom or in the gym.

Once wifi is hooked up (which my son was told would be "soon") then it makes it a much quicker form of communication.

I don't know. You can probably call the prison and ask. At Taylorville, the company is Connect-GTL.

I know this company also does commissary payments and I have switched over from JPAY to Connect-GTL for my son's monthly "allowance" (sounds totally silly to say allowance for a grown man)...lol

Do they have different devices at different prisons? I was under the impression that it's all tablets but a friend of mine recently told me that her husband who is at Menard doesn't have a tablet but just an mp3 player, so I'm confused now. At my LO's facility they don't have anything yet so I'm just curious.

Correct pt, there were no tablets at Robinson and the mp3s were supposedly coming.  Different joints have different devices. Not sure if they all work thru gtl. I communicated on gtl messaging w my LO when he was at Robinson thru a main tablet they all used near the phones. But individually they had nothing and his friend who went to Taylorville had an mp3.

Thanks 3tenjen! I checked the GTL website and couldn't find any info on mp3 players, all they talk about is tablets. :wc14:
So does anyone know if the actual handheld tablets are already available anywhere at all then? Or are they actually tablets but the inmates just call them mp3 players because they can only use them for music right now? If it really is 2 different devices, how much are they? :wc38:

I'm also really confused about all of this lol. So do you purchase the tablets for them or do they get them from commissary bc I don't see anything on gtl website about purchasing the tablets? My LO is in IL River

Our son is at taylorville and has a mp3 player.  This is all done internal.  He purchased it thru commissary.  He puts in his requests for music and pays for it out of his commissary account.  There is a single kiosk that downloads his music from.  We dont have anything to do with it except putting money on his books.
