30 days GED class credits- Retro?
« on: December 27, 2015, 06:26:53 PM »

Hello  Everyone,

I have a question that I have not been able to locate the answer to regarding the Good Conduct Sentencing Credit (HB 3884/PA 99-0241 – Sen. Michael Connelly): Amends the Unified Code of Corrections. Provides that 90 (rather than 60) days of sentence credit shall be awarded to any prisoner who passes high school equivalency testing while the prisoner is committed to the Department of Corrections. Provides that the Department of Corrections may also award 90 (rather than 60) days of sentence credit to any committed person who passed high school equivalency testing while he or she was held in pre-trial detention prior to the current commitment to the Department of Corrections.

Question: Will this be retroactive to any inmates that have been in prison and passed their GED, or will this be from this day forward type of credit?

Did he earn his GED while he was in pretrial detention prior to his current conviction?

The tests are even different for those taking it, done all on a computer on line, no more written, also ....

"The GED test recently became more challenging and changed its content to be more in line with the Common Core State Standards, which may furtherlower the pass rate. "

Let us know if they do give him the extra time.

Does anyone know if an inmate obtains their diploma/GED by outside means such as a correspondence course, will they still be eligible for the time credit? My husband was in a class that was at the prison but is now pursuing his diploma on his own thru an outside source. He has tried asking his counselor but is not getting an answer. Thx

After asking, counselor stated everything is in the air still about this, they have not even started implementing this to the inmates. Counselor's still not sure when they will/can start issuing. Also not sure if it's retro.
