Children of Incarcerated Parents

What is the purpose of this service?
To assist children and families with incarcerated family members. The Illinois Department of Human Services (DHS) has many services to help you and your family at this difficult time. DHS wants to make sure you know what those services are and how to get them.

What services are offered?

  • Refugee & Immigrant Services
  • Rehabilitation for Persons with Disabilities

  • Health & Medical
  • Housing
  • Mentoring Children of Prisoners
  • Mental Health
  • Pregnancy & Parenting
  • Violence & Abuse Prevention
  • Youth Services
  • Alcoholism & Addiction

Who can receive these services?

The child or their caretaker may qualify for services.  Each service has different qualifications. You should speak with an IDHS professional to review your needs.

How to apply?

Eligibility for each service/program is determined individually. You may apply for some services online, at DHS offices or through our community partners.

Family and Corrections Network  The FC Network offers information, training and technical assistance on children of prisoners, parenting programs for prisoners, prison visiting, incarcerated fathers and mothers, etc. Of special interest are links to books to read with children of prisoners and an extensive listing of relevant programs for prisoners and their families.
