WOW!!!!!!  This is the first time in the 3.5 years my son has been incarcerated that they are mentioning TIS law reform!

I calculated that if they would enact the law in Jan 2018, my son would get 4.5 months more credit!!!!  Wow - that would be fantastic.

Where does this proposed bill stand in Springfield?

It is still in the rules committee which typical means that this late in the session nothing will happen until next session in the fall.

It is hopeful that there appears to be a return (although a baby step) to a time when we had compassion and a desire to move those convicted of low level non violent crimes back into our community.  My son got 8 years at 50% for leaving the scene of an accident involving a bicyclists on a rural highway at 4:30 am in the morning.  No drugs or alcohol charges and first offense.  He is still  devastated to know that instead of a deer he hit a person who died.

We were floored with the length of his sentence to say the least.  I cannot imagine gong thru this with a LO that receives 27 years with no good time to work towards.  God Bless you and your family.  It is nice to have a message board to connect with others on the same emotional issues.

Our legislators over the years have created this monster with the tough on crime mentality and the general public either doesn't have a clue about what is going on or don't care.  My guess the latter.
I am 60 and it seemed to me when i was young that a felon was somebody that did something really bad but now days you get a felony over traffic charges and ruins a young persons life forever in terms of getting a job and schooling.  I really hope that Illinois is finally turning the corner on this and being reasonable again.  But at this point I probably wont see it in my lifetime.

I hope the best for you and others that are struggling also.

I just read it and it seems to give  hope to those in for aggravated DUI which would affect my loved one. Guess it's time to start writing legislators again asking them to support passing it. Thanks for posting about this bill.

If you go to the web site link below, you will find a place to click on members of the house or senate. There you will find their biography and address in Springfield. I have also found that many of them have websites so you can email them if you can locate the website. I just searched on Google to find the website. The sponsor of this particular bill is Barbara Flynn Currie so I wrote to her. You may also want to write to your own representative or House Speaker Michael Madigan or Governor Rauner. Other people might have better info but this is how I've been doing it. The second link below will show more info on this particular bill.

Look up your Reps for your area and CALL them.

They adjourn for this current session on May 31st, so if this thing hasn't gone through the whole process it will die in session and will have to be reintroduced, in the next session.  This particular one will be dead if it doesn't get through now.

I called the rep that is sponsoring this bill. The house has reached their deadline to move forward in this session. They said possibly in the fall there might be movement on it, however not to have any hopes until the earliest of next spring.

Disappointing....!

I also called the sponsor's office today and basically got the same information, that it might move forward in the spring session that starts in January. The gentleman took my name and phone number and noted that I was in support of this bill, so I don't think it hurts to call and let them know we support their efforts on this.

Yes, this would be nice and I'm praying something is done not only for our L/O's but for the future of this state which seems to always be in dept. I think a lot of the people in charge are using our money to benefit them and not for the people it's entitled to benefit. Tax payers need to take control of who they put in office whether dem or rep

I too called Rep. Currie's office and stated I was in favor of passing this bill. I too was told this may not come forward until spring session but said to continue to contact my state senators & representatives letting them know I am in support of this legislation. So I encourage all of you to please do the same. Fight for your loved one! Call, write a letter, email and keep pushing forward to have our voices heard and get this passed!

This bill hasn't passed out of the rules committee and would have a long way to go to be done by May 31st when they go on recess.  I wouldn't get too excited about it now,  but maybe when they come back in the fall someone will resubmit this legislation.  Once they go into session for summer this one is dead.
