Debit Cards at Each Prison - Vending machines
« on: March 31, 2006, 01:44:23 PM »
As my inmate moved around the state I was required to buy new vending machine cards as they are not all accepted at each prison. This would be a good place to share that information and possibly offer trades to our members who are stuck with the wrong cards....

My nephew just got transferred from Joliet to Shawnee.   Can you tell me how you get these debit cards?   Can I order them before the web site shows him at Shawnee (its show him in transportation)?  I have lots of questions about the process as my family is new to this State facility business we have only had to deal with counties before and I am finding this is way different.

Tink, you can get the card once you go to the facility(Shawnee). They cost $1.00 and then you add money to them, as much  per visit as you like..  Whatever you think your loved one will eat up and of course you during the visits.  For example, when we go visit we usually put $25.00 to $30.00 on and there is usually $3-4 left ....   A slice of pizza costs $2.75 in one machine and a small pizza(same size) costs $3.50 in another.     Just remember, if he gets moved again, the card is not good at the next facility. You must buy another at each facility they are at.

Hope this helps

Hey guys, come November 27th, that Monday after the Thanksgiving Holiday weekend, Danville, i don't know about the other prisons, but they are using a smart card, that is what the guard told me on the last visit. I don't know how much this is going to cost us.  On the vending machine they said it was being switched the 11/27 so don't put to much money on the card, because it won't be refunded, which is nothing knew. i have 3 cards that have maybe about $30. on all 3 cards. they are just memories i guess for me. just wanted to share this news about Danville don't know if this is happening at other prisons.

I have two from Big Muddy, but I am not sure how much is on them.  If you would like them, please PM me your address or PO Box and I would be happy to pass them along!

I have three from Lawrence,  one from Centralia,  one from Stateville.  They don't have much money on them,  but I'd be happy to send them free to someone visiting those places and save them the buck plus another dollar or so.   I try to use the money up each visit so I don't get stuck.

I have a debit card from Logan CC.  I'm not sure how much is on it.  I'm pretty sure I had just loaded it back up when pop was moved.  I'll send it to anyone that could use it.   Free...Zilch....no charge... I'll pass it along out of the goodness of my heart.  Drop me a line if your interested.

Hey guys the cards that someone might be willing to give, might not be used at that facility. They change the cards a lot. I have two from Hill, and I have two from Danville but Danville changed there's in Dec. See what I mean so check with the facility first that would be the best solution. And Danville cards are $5.00 they went from a $1.00 to $5.00 in less than two years. The new vending machine company doesn't give returns and the machines are old and in need of repairs. The worst part of this new vending company they went up on the prices of every items. Hamburgers/Cheeseburger $4.00  Pops $1.75 so good luck.

MAybe everyone should send their extra cards to the IPT PO Box and Daz can send them to members that really need them!

Are their any charities or organizations that help families of inmates that are unable to visit due to financial difficulty?

Karen,  those prices are outrageous.  This was at Danville?  I guess I'd be hoping for a  45 c coffee machine then.  They really take advantage of us wanting to please our inmate when we visit them.
I've been told in Mn prisons you sit side by side,  cannot hug or kiss,  and there are no vending machines at all.  If you need to use the toilet your visit is done!

All prisons should have vending machines, if for no other reason than for the little kids that visit. You can't expect a small child to sit in a visit for 2, 3, even 4 hours without having something to drink at least.

I just called Menard. I spoke to the Electric Eye, to the Trust Office, and finally to the visiting room sergeant. I wanted to know if the new card machine accepts the new $10's and $20's. No one could give me a definitive answer, but to the best of the sergeant's knowledge, he said it does not. And you have to have a $5 bill to get the card. In other words, you can't put a $10 or a $20 in and get the card with it. He also said the prices in the vending machines have gone up by about a quarter (as in 25% more) to a third. Soda pop is now sold in bottles, and is $1.50.

and where I get to visit, with a wheelchair, we have either limited or no access to the vending machines, depending on who is on duty.

Jewels I know I should really be kicked in the butt but I forgot where you visit because I know that is how it is at Menard's with people in the wheel chair. They have to send someone to the vending machines to get the stuff for them so they need to know what is in there.

Stateville, Lisa. First we have to find a guard who is willing to go down to the visit room for us. (A rare thing) Then I have to give him my card and trust he will bring what we asked. Finding a guard is hard as we have to catch their eye and are not allowed to leave either the table we visit at or the room we are in.
I heard that in menard people in wheelchairs have to vistit in the Guard's room.

Can you tell which card belongs to which facility by looking at it? I have some but don't remember which facility they were from. I'd be more than happy to forward ones I have to anyone that can use them. I know which locations they should be to ...just not sure which one is which and I don't visit either of those facilities any longer.
