Notification of Unauthorized Mail
« on: December 06, 2006, 07:02:13 PM »
I recently received some questions about sending mail to prisons.  I thought the following information might be helpful as we are in the Holiday Season when families may mail more than usual.  I received this letter from Hill Correctional Facility when I inadvertently mailed stamps to my son, way back in the early days when I was young and naive!

They used to send items back home. Sometimes they would send a notice to the inmate asking if the confiscated item should be discarded or mailed back. If he wanted it mailed back, the money for the postage would come out of his trust fund. However, they can now just get rid of the items without any notification. J hadn't seen his father in 26 years and no one even knew where he was. I was able to track down a half sister who told me J's father had passed away a few years earlier. She had lost all her possessions in a house fire, so only had one photo of her father. But she sent it and asked that J return it to her since it was her only one. She mailed it to me and I sent it to him. It never made it to him and it was not returned to me. I finally realized it was confiscated because it was a photo of him sitting on a couch in front of a coffee table, and on the coffee table was a bottle of beer.

So he only photo of their 66-year-old father, now dead, in existence was tossed into the trash because it showed one half-full bottle of beer.

I hope you all know how easy it is to have pictures copied at any place that develops photos, I send tons of pictures around but never an original.  I even have a $150.00 copier, sacnner/fax at home for the computer that makes a beautiful color copy of photos, just on regular paper, he's interested in the image and not the paper it's printed on.  And it's so easy to make another if he loses or damages it.  Does any one know why they return mail if you put some perfume on it?  What does that have to do with anything?  I try to think of a reason to that logic and I can't.  They get the perfume samples that come in magazines all the time.

My guess.. if too many guys got the perfumed letters, the place would really stink.  Could you imagine having 800 guys get a perfumed letter in one day?  And let's be honest, some perfumes do NOT smell good, and some are EXTREMELY strong.  For instance, some gals may love Tommy Girl, but I think it smells like "Off" bug spray.

I've sent in perfumed letters, BUT, it's been by accident haha.  My lotion is the same scent as my body spray, and I've used lotion right before folding his letter.  He didn't complain about it (actually said it was nice).  But, like I said it was an accident, and they could probably tell by looking at the letter that I didn't spray it or anything.  He was shocked that it went through, but, like I said.. I wasn't trying to do it.
